Your standard Hamish Macbeth mystery。 A mystery man moves into a village in the Scottish highlands and soon has all the women vying for his attention。 When he suddenly disappears, Hamish suspects foul play, and refuses to give up until he has figured everything out。

3。5 stars。 Another winner in the Hamish McBeth series。 Good ol' Hamish is bound and determined not to move up in the world (or he would have to move to Strathbane!)。 He is just being a good constable when murder falls in his lap。 He is observant enough to know when people are acting out of the ordinary。 It is the behavior of the women in a nearby town that make this book funny。 It must be pretty darn boring in the hamlets of the highlands - when one charming man can really turn heads。 On to #11。 3。5 stars。 Another winner in the Hamish McBeth series。 Good ol' Hamish is bound and determined not to move up in the world (or he would have to move to Strathbane!)。 He is just being a good constable when murder falls in his lap。 He is observant enough to know when people are acting out of the ordinary。 It is the behavior of the women in a nearby town that make this book funny。 It must be pretty darn boring in the hamlets of the highlands - when one charming man can really turn heads。 On to #11。 。 。 。 。。。more

Another Hamish adventure。 Hamish and Priscilla's relationship is on rocky ground this time around as Hamish looks into the mysterious leaving of the gorgeous looking new comer to the village of Drim。 Has he really packed up and left after upsetting and causing hormones to rise in the whole female population of the village or has murder most foul been done? I listened to the audio version of this book。 The narrator was new and was very good。 I have not been following exactly in order, so I was a bit surprised at the status of Hamish and Priscilla's relationship。 There is something about Hamish that reminds me of The Pink Panther's inspector Clouseau, yet much more intelligent。 He seems to have great instincts in crime solving。 I am enjoying this series。 I listened to the audio version of this book。 The narrator was new and was very good。 I have not been following exactly in order, so I was a bit surprised at the status of Hamish and Priscilla's relationship。 There is something about Hamish that reminds me of The Pink Panther's inspector Clouseau, yet much more intelligent。 He seems to have great instincts in crime solving。 I am enjoying this series。 。。。more

A posh English chap moved into the village Drim。 Peter has all the women in a tizzy == the men not so much。 Peter goes missing and a body is found, but not his。 Hamish is unflappable and delightful。

Another quaint and predictable Hamish Macbeth mystery。

I found this book a bit more interesting than the last。 I would still say that the women are portrayed very badly, vain and bad tempered。 However more to this story, more meat on the bones。 I enjoyed where the tale took us。 Another easy read, can be done easily in a day。

Ugh, my hopes that the ridiculous on and off crap with Priscilla was finally over were dashed。 All the melodrama there really detracts from the actual stories and there's no room to develop other characters, suspects, etc。 But this was so an intriguing puzzle to some degree。 Ugh, my hopes that the ridiculous on and off crap with Priscilla was finally over were dashed。 All the melodrama there really detracts from the actual stories and there's no room to develop other characters, suspects, etc。 But this was so an intriguing puzzle to some degree。 。。。more

I have to say that this book was my least favourite and that purely because of Hamish's character。 He seemed much pettier than usual and he could be downright cruel to people who were perfectly nice or at least indifferent to him。 I hope the next book is better。 I have to say that this book was my least favourite and that purely because of Hamish's character。 He seemed much pettier than usual and he could be downright cruel to people who were perfectly nice or at least indifferent to him。 I hope the next book is better。 。。。more

Hamish is still (sort of) engaged to Priscilla, but things are not going well because of Priscilla's "reserve"。 Hamish visits a small town in his jurisdiction, to find a very nice looking Englishman has moved into the town。 All the women are a flutter with excitement but the men are less than happy。 When the man leaves town in the middle of the night, Hamish is the only one to suspect foul play。Really like the life of the Scottish Highlands。 Hamish is still (sort of) engaged to Priscilla, but things are not going well because of Priscilla's "reserve"。 Hamish visits a small town in his jurisdiction, to find a very nice looking Englishman has moved into the town。 All the women are a flutter with excitement but the men are less than happy。 When the man leaves town in the middle of the night, Hamish is the only one to suspect foul play。Really like the life of the Scottish Highlands。 。。。more

This one had me guessing until the end。 I liked the completely new cast of characters。 I am tired of the Hamish-Priscilla dynamic though。 I think they are a terrible couple and have no chemistry。

Hamish is Hamish, but I definitely felt extra sorry for Priscilla in this one

Just when you think things are going well for the main character, this book happens。 I’m going to read one more, and then it may be time to try something new for a bit。 Ten in a row is a lot of Hamish。

Entertaining as ever if you can tolerate the author's thatcherite prejudices。 At this distance from the 1990s it's possible to glide over the brief conflation of stalinism and "the far left" with a man who abuses his wife。 I could wish Beaton had liked people more but at least Hamish is mostly tolerant of people's foibles and it doesn't make him any less interesting or believable。 The big question is whether PHS will ever stop and wonder why she is behaving this way。 Read on。 Entertaining as ever if you can tolerate the author's thatcherite prejudices。 At this distance from the 1990s it's possible to glide over the brief conflation of stalinism and "the far left" with a man who abuses his wife。 I could wish Beaton had liked people more but at least Hamish is mostly tolerant of people's foibles and it doesn't make him any less interesting or believable。 The big question is whether PHS will ever stop and wonder why she is behaving this way。 Read on。 。。。more

It's been months since I read a Hamish Macbeth novel, and I've come to see the series in a new light。 While I enjoy the novels, they are basically the same as the Agatha Raisin novels - the only differences are the location and the main character here is male。Where are they similar? The way Hamish and Agatha both act with their love interests, and the way their love interests act。 The way the crimes are basically solved by gong to various houses and asking questions and then jumping to conclusions。 And, lastly, Hamish is treated by the rest of the police force in basically the same way as Agatha is treated by the police。Beside the similarities, this is an enjoyable read。 I find the way Hamish and Priscilla act towards each other annoying, but the thing that draws me into these novels is the other characters in the Highlands。 Without the interesting supporting cast, I don't think these novels would be as good。In this novel, Hamish is investigating the disappearance of a newcomer to the village of Drim。 Sound familiar? That's because the arrival of a newcomer to stir up trouble with the locals is used a lot by MC Beaton。 In this case, the women of Drim are all aflutter over the newcomer, and Hamish finds the disappearance suspicious。 He uses his personal time to try to prove his case - you'll need to read to see if he proves himself right。 。。。more

Death of a Charming Man by M。C。 Beaton is the 10th book of the Hamish MacBeth mystery series set in the modern-day Highlands of Scotland。 Hamish is once again the sole detective at the simple, rustic police station of Lochdubh - which is how he likes it。 Disturbing his peace however are the changes his fiancee Priscilla Halburton-Smythe is making to his home。 They love each other - but - she's trying to "make something of him", such as get him promoted and move to a nice house in Strathbane。 Ham Death of a Charming Man by M。C。 Beaton is the 10th book of the Hamish MacBeth mystery series set in the modern-day Highlands of Scotland。 Hamish is once again the sole detective at the simple, rustic police station of Lochdubh - which is how he likes it。 Disturbing his peace however are the changes his fiancee Priscilla Halburton-Smythe is making to his home。 They love each other - but - she's trying to "make something of him", such as get him promoted and move to a nice house in Strathbane。 Hamish wonders "Why couldn't people realize it was a rare gift to be happy with one's lot?"An attractive young man moves into Drim, a tiny glum village within Hamish's jurisdiction。 The women of the village begin "tarting themselves up" as their menfolk put it。 Former best friends are now rivals for Peter Hynd's attention。 Hamish fears the worst。 Happy to get away from hen-pecking at home, he bucks his higher-ups (in Strathbane) and stays in Drim to investigate。 He doesn't believe Peter left on his own。 When a woman is murdered, he doesn't believe in the easy-way-out arrest。Priscilla comes to Drim; they work together well to uncover evidence, as in previous cases they solved。 Each is very effective communicating in different styles with different suspects。 Hamish dramatically gathers the villagers and forces a confession。 Solving the murder is eclipsed by a major procedural and professional mistake。 Hamish realizes he's made a personal mistake as well。 。。。more

Same M。C。 Beaton formula: newcomer arrives at village; charms the socks off everybody and creates animosity between the locals。 Turns out to be a grade A loser。 Someone bops him off。Meanwhile Hamish and his fiancee demonstrate the social intelligence of 12 year olds, not different from Agatha Raisin and her men friends。I wonder if Beaton didn't believe she could create interesting situations with happily married people? Frankly, she could marry off her protagonists and give them the same flaws and show how married people work through them。 I would find that more interesting than the adolescent, angsty melodramas that her protagonists currently contrive。 At least Beaton contrives them and they definitely feel contrived。 Something stupid always comes up to create childish misunderstandings between Hamish and his ladylove (no different from Agatha and James Lacy)。But it's still a mildly interesting mystery。 I check them out on audio and listen to them while I clean my house, so I haven't wasted money and it helps with boring chores。 。。。more
